Best Homemade Burger Recipe Ever

Making a burger at home doesn’t have to simply be combining some beef mince, onion and egg, then shaping it into a patty. Adding some spices, herbs and a creative spark can transform basic homemade beef burgers into a restaurant-standard masterpiece.

Whether you’re using pre-minced beef, slices of brisket, grounding your own chunk of meat, the list goes on… you can create one of the most delicious, juicy and mouth-wateringly good burgers from your very own kitchen. In this guide, we outline the ingredients and methods needed to create the best homemade juicy burgers you can make!

Ingredients (serves 4)

Burger

  • 500g beef mince
  • 1 small red onion, finely chopped
  • 1 garlic clove, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp white wine vinegar
  • 1 medium egg
  • 4 brioche buns

Sauce and toppings

  • 3 tbsp mayonnaise
  • 2 tbsp tomato ketchup
  • 2 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Slice of cheddar cheese
  • Iceberg lettuce leaves
  • Tomatoes
  • Red Onion

Method and instructions

  1. Once you have prepared all the ingredients, place them into a large bowl. Season with salt and pepper, then mix thoroughly.
  2. Cover the bowl of burger mixture and leave to chill in the fridge for 1 hour.
  3. Using your hands, shape the mixture into 4 even burger patties and brush both sides with a small covering of oil.
  4. COOKING METHOD: if using a hob, heat a griddle pan so that it is searing and cook the beef patties for 3 – 4 minutes on each side, or until well browned on the outside and cooked through the middle.
  5. COOKING METHOD: if using a barbecue, make sure it is well lit and cook the beef patties for 3 – 4 minutes on each side, or until well browned on the outside and cooked through the middle.
  6. OPTIONAL: if you want to add something to your burger that’ll really make it one of a kind, preheat the grill to medium-hot and top the burger with a slice of cheddar cheese and grill for 2 minutes until it has melted and bubbling.
  7. Whilst the cheese is melting into your burger, lightly toast the buns until golden and crispy.
  8. Mix the mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard and Worcestershire sauce in a small bowl and spread on both sides of the toasted buns.
  9. Add sliced tomato and iceberg lettuce to the base bun, then the burger patty and finish off with red onion slices.

FAQs surrounding homemade burgers

Should I put eggs in homemade burgers?

Adding egg to a burger can help bind the meat together and prevent it from falling apart in the pan or BBQ. We would recommend adding an egg to your homemade burger.

Should I put breadcrumbs in homemade burgers?

Breadcrumbs are not typically used in burger patties, but they can give a lighter texture when cooking.

Is it better to cook burgers in the oven or on a hob?

Whilst you can cook a burger in an oven, pan-frying them will not only be faster, but they will also get a crispier texture on the exterior. Cooking on a hob would be our recommendation.
